Hair removal, commonly referred to as depilatory, epilation or shaving, is the intentional removal of unwanted body hair through excision, plucking or waxing. For many years, men and women used hair trimmers to get rid of unwanted hair. The main difference between the trimmers is the length of the blades that the person uses to pull out the hair from a specific part of the body. The trimmers typically come in three to four inch lengths. The other differences that come with the hair trimmers include whether or not the person uses scissors or tweezers to remove the unwanted hair.

More recently, people opt for electrolysis to remove unwanted hair on their body. The process of electrolysis involves using a machine that delivers a stream of electrical pulses to the target area, which in turn causes the hair follicle to die. After the area is treated, it will take several treatments for the hair to grow back, and the person will experience some small scars from the procedure. The type of hair removal that is used depends on the type of hair that needs to be removed. For instance, if the person is looking to remove facial hair, they may want to use electrolysis while they are going through a waxing session.

Hair removal can also be achieved through laser hair removal. Laser technology has been around for quite some time, and it is one of the newer forms of hair removal. This process involves sending energy from a device that emits light rays to a hair follicle to cause the cell to die and break down. The light rays also burn any existing pigment that is inside the cell.

Many people choose laser hair removal because the treatment can be done under the supervision of a doctor and the results can be noticeable within a short period of time. Some people do not want to undergo the pain involved with waxing or shaving, which can leave unsightly scars on their skin. With laser hair removal, the person only has to stay in the treatment room where the light rays have been directed and be exposed to the light rays for a short amount of time, typically less than ten minutes. If the person is not feeling well, they can always walk out of the room.

The different types of hair removal for women include waxing, shaving, electrolysis and laser hair removal. There are more hair-removal options for men today, and one of the newest is called microdermabrasion. which is not covered in this article.
